Match Day Updates

Please note that due to some weather-related issues (lightning in the area), some matches were delayed and a even ended before the full 80 minutes were played.

And some, like Upper St Clair vs Seneca Valley, resumed play after a delay, then continued on until after 11 p.m. ending soon thereafter, only because a golden goal was scored in the first minute of extra time.

Note to @PIAA Board of Directors…

What are we doing here?

It's after 11 p.m.!?!? The road team has at least a 30-40 minute drive here.

This is Exhibit A to support proposal for elimination of extra time in regular season matches. It needs to happen STAT https://t.co/OcsJGyM38q

The official ruling on PIAA Soccer to determine if a match is deemed an ‘official contest’ if it’s impossible to play (weather or other conditions) is as follows from the Soccer Section of the PIAA Sports Rulebook:

Adopt Rule 7-1-3 — In the event a Contest must be suspended because of conditions which make it impossible to continue play, the head referee shall declare it an official Contest if one complete half or more of the Contest has been played. If less than one half of the Contest has been played, the game shall be restarted from the suspension of play. In the event a winner must be determined for regular season tournament or to advance during a post season Contest, the Contest shall be resumed at the point of suspension.

WPIAL BOYS SOCCER SCHEDULE / PREVIEW (8/27/24)

Much like the girls on Monday, the high school boys season will start on Tuesday with section play for many Class 3A and Class 2A schools, while many others will get in some non-conference tests early in the season.

Here are a couple of mini-match preview/capsules of two of the most interesting (from our limited view) match-ups coming up on Tuesday, featuring one in 3A and another in 2A:

  • Mars-Hampton (3A) – This is clash of rival programs in Class 3A Section 1 who, when the smoke clears after section play, always are threats in the postseason. These two boys soccer programs with coaches (Chris Knauff and Matt McKawley) who have been through their share of WPIAL/PIAA battles, have been in the running for section, district and state titles for the good part of the past decade and a half, and they both should have strong teams again this season. Mars has a solid returning core, including midfielder/defender Zach Angoff who also trains and competes with Steel City FC. The Talbots graduated 12 seniors, including the school’s single-season goal-scoring king and two other all-WPIAL players, from an 18-4-1 team that went undefeated in Section 1-3A and reached the WPIAL title game. Talbots bring back five starters: senior midfielder Caden Muchenski, senior defender Dom Jordan, junior forward Xavier Ware and junior goalkeepers Landon Bieker and Gavin Guinn. While this is the season opener for Hampton, Mars played twice over the weekend, so we’ll see what gives — will Hampton be rusty without any full game speed under their belts or will Mars, who are 2-0, after wins over District 10 Fairview and Allderdice at their weekend tournament.

It’s game day! First section match of the season for the boys. The Talbots take on Mars tonight at Fridley field. Come out and cheer them on. Let’s go, Hampton. ⁦@HTSDAthletics⁩ ⁦@pghsoccernowpic.twitter.com/BSXpinCv6J

  • North Catholic vs Deer Lakes (2A) — The Trojans looked pretty good over the weekend at the JRK Memorial Classic, while playing a pair of Class 4A Schools. First, on Saturday they lost 3-1 to North Allegheny (click for PSN match report), but bounced back nicely with a win vs Central Catholic on Sunday. North Catholic will be fun team to follow this year, as they dropped down to Class 2A, but have a skillful group that’s good on the ball and should be able to score goals at this level. Deer Lakes, always a regular contender in Class 2A — and always battling with Shady Side Academy (and last year Burrell) in this section for supremacy, opened their season with a 3-1 win vs Class 4A Gateway on Saturday. Despite having a good young core from a group that won the WPIAL title in 2022, they were stunned in the first round of the playoffs last season by an upstart squad from Hopewell. The Lancers should be ready to make another run as they bring back eight starters, and they’re mostly juniors, including the striker duo of Collin Rodgers and Peyton Kushon, goalkeeper Wesley Boyle and midfielder Zane Spence. This week will be a good opening season gauntlet, as they’ll face Shady Side on Thursday too.

They Said It:

“We scrimmaged Seneca (Valley), we played North Allegheny today, then Central Catholic tomorrow, so we’ll be done with (playing Class) 4A teams for a while,” Schlegel remarked.“We have to take possession of the ball a bit more against these teams that can come in waves. We are a team that has a lot of skill and looking forward to see how we progress this season.”
